Sewage Cleanup

Category 3 water—handled safely and completely.

Sewage backups are a serious health hazard. Our crews are trained, equipped, and certified to safely remove contaminated water, sanitize affected areas, and dispose of hazardous materials according to OSHA and IICRC guidelines. We handle the biohazard so you and your family don't have to.

Why sewage is a Category 3 emergency

Category 3 water (black water) contains bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and other pathogens that pose immediate health risks through contact, inhalation, or ingestion. E. coli, hepatitis A, salmonella, and giardia are all common in residential sewage backups. OSHA and IICRC standards require full PPE, controlled removal, and thorough disinfection—it is not a job for household cleaning supplies.

What gets removed (and why)

Porous materials that have absorbed Category 3 water—drywall, carpet, padding, insulation, particleboard, and any wood that cannot be effectively cleaned and dried—must be removed and disposed of as regulated waste. Hard surfaces are cleaned, disinfected with EPA-registered hospital-grade products, and verified before reconstruction begins. Cutting corners here means contamination remains behind walls and under floors for years.

Crawlspace and main-line backups

Many of the worst sewage events in our area are crawlspace failures—a backed-up main line discharging under the home, often discovered only when odor reaches the living space. We perform full crawlspace decontamination including saturated insulation removal, vapor barrier replacement, structural disinfection, and source-line repair coordination.

What's included

  • Category 3 (black water) extraction
  • Removal and disposal of contaminated materials
  • EPA-registered antimicrobial treatment
  • Air scrubbing and odor neutralization
  • Crawlspace and subfloor decontamination
  • Reconstruction of removed materials

Common causes

  • Main sewer line blockage or root intrusion
  • Toilet or septic system overflow
  • Failed sump pump during heavy rain
  • Backflow from municipal sewer surcharge
  • Broken sewer lateral under the home

What to do right now

  1. 1.Evacuate the affected area—this is a biohazard
  2. 2.Keep children and pets completely away
  3. 3.Do not run water or flush toilets
  4. 4.Turn off HVAC to prevent spreading contamination
  5. 5.Call (360) 228-2220 for emergency biohazard response

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean sewage myself?
We strongly recommend against it. Category 3 water contains pathogens that require professional PPE, EPA-registered disinfectants, and regulated waste disposal. Inadequate cleanup leaves contamination behind that can cause illness for months.
Do I really have to throw out my carpet?
Almost always yes. Carpet padding is an open-cell foam that absorbs and harbors contamination, and most carpet backings cannot be disinfected to safe-contact standards. The cost of replacement is far less than the health risk of leaving it.
Is sewage cleanup covered by insurance?
Coverage varies. Backup of sewer or drain coverage is often a separate endorsement on homeowner's policies. We'll review your declarations page with you before scoping the work and document everything for your claim.
How long until my home is safe to reoccupy?
After full extraction, removal, disinfection, and drying—typically 3–7 days for a contained event. Whole-home or crawlspace contamination can take longer. We'll give you a clear timeline after the initial inspection.
